Black man shot dead by Atlanta cops: no charges

More than two years following the deadly police shots at the African American Rayshard Brooks in the US city of Atlanta, no charges have been brought once morest the two police officers involved.

Prosecutor in charge of the case, Pete Skandalakis, said yesterday (local time) that charges once morest white officers Garrett Rolfe and Devin Brosnan would be dropped. The use of deadly force was justified.

Brooks was shot in the back by Rolfe on June 12, 2020 in Atlanta, Georgia, while attempting to evade arrest. The incident happened a few weeks following the death of African American George Floyd in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Brooks’ death also caused great outrage and protests amid heated sentiment across the country.

Breonna Taylor case: police officer pleads guilty

In the case of African American Breonna Taylor, who was also killed more than two years ago, a former police officer in Louisville, Kentucky, pleaded guilty in federal court.

She admitted to being involved in forging a document that was used to obtain a search warrant for Taylor’s home. The US Department of Justice announced this yesterday. She also admitted to lying to investigators regarding the search warrant.

Breonna Taylor was shot dead by police at her home in March 2020. Like Floyd, the name of the 26-year-old black paramedic became a symbol of the movement once morest racism and police violence.
