Jasper Philipsen wins the 15th stage of the Tour de France. In a mass sprint, the Belgian from the Alpecin-Deceuninck team secured the day’s victory following 202.5 km in Carcassonne. Silvan Dillier’s team-mate prevails just ahead of Wout van Aert and Mads Pedersen.
Meanwhile, the French are still waiting for their first stage win. It still looked like it up to 500 meters from the finish line. But escapee Benjamin Thomas was swallowed up by the field.
Black day for Jumbo-Visma
Tour leader Jonas Vingegaard has not had a happy day. He successfully defends his Maillot Jaune. But he loses two noble helpers with Primoz Roglic and Steven Kruijswijk. In the morning, his team Jumbo-Visma announced the first bad news: Roglic might no longer continue due to the consequences of a fall at the beginning of the tour.
During the stage, the tour also ends for Kruijswijk. The Dutchman has to be taken to the hospital because of a fall. Then Vingegaard gets it too. But he escapes with a fright.
On Monday, the Tour de France is a day off. This probably comes at exactly the right time for Jumbo-Visma to mobilize forces and discuss tactics anew. Because from Tuesday it’s off to the Pyrenees and without the two helpers it won’t be any easier for Vingegaard to bring the yellow jersey to Paris.
