Once all official procedures have been completed, the renovation of the bridge should begin in September. Since danger is imminent, the city can award the contract quickly. However, in order to prevent leaching from occurring once more, the renovation is costly: the bridge will be removed and cast iron piles with a diameter of around 15 centimeters will be driven into the ground around the existing foundation. These piles are connected to the existing foundation with a concrete collar and secure it together with the existing wooden piles. This is to guarantee that the foundation does not tilt even during high water. The construction work must be carried out in the dry, which is why the water must be kept away from the foundation for the duration of this work.
If everything goes according to plan, the city’s experts assume that the bridge will be completed by the end of the year and can be opened to traffic once more. The costs will be around 500,000 euros.
