BKW Signs Long-Term Offshore Wind Farm Supply Contract, Securing Renewable Energy Source

Bern (awp) – Energy company BKW has concluded a long-term supply contract with the operator of the offshore wind farm OWP Butendiek. The Bernese group will obtain some 200 gigawatt hours of electricity per year from this site, established in the North Sea off the German coast.

From July 2024, BKW will purchase 18% of total production at a fixed price, BKW said in a press release on Monday. The Butendiek offshore wind farm has a capacity of around 288 megawatts.

“By purchasing electricity at a fixed price over several years, BKW strengthens the investment security of producers and allows the financing of new renewable energy projects,” explained the Berne firm in the document.

The Butendiek wind farm, with 80 turbines, is located approximately 35 kilometers from the west coast of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The owner of the wind farm is a consortium consisting of Citic, Industriens Pensionsforsikring, Itochu Corporation, Greencoat Renewables, Octopus Energy, Siemens and wpd.
