In a closely watched contest, the BJP emerged victorious in the chandigarh mayoral elections, securing 19 votes to defeat the AAP-Congress alliance which garnered 17 votes. BJP candidate Harpreet Kaur Babla was declared the winner,outperforming AAP’s Prem Lata.
The campaign leading up to the election was intense, with both the BJP adn the AAP-Congress alliance vying for control of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. Voting commenced at 11:20 am in the assembly hall of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and concluded at 12:19 pm.
The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation comprises 35 members, including elected councillors and the Chandigarh MP, who holds voting rights as an ex-officio member. Prior to the election,the seat distribution stood at: AAP with 13 councillors,Congress with 6,BJP with 16,and 1 vote for the Chandigarh MP (Congress).
Adding a dramatic twist to the contest, just days before the election, Congress councillor Gurbax Rawat switched allegiance to the BJP, bolstering the party’s position to 16 seats.
The high-stakes election was conducted via a secret ballot. Ramneek Singh Bedi, a nominated councillor, served as the presiding officer. Justice Jaishree thakur, a retired Punjab and Haryana high Court Judge, was appointed by the Supreme Court as an independant observer to oversee the proceedings. the Supreme Court also mandated that the entire election process be videographed.
