Chinese company Bitmain reported regarding the start of sales of the long-awaited Antminer E9 system, designed primarily for mining Ethereum. According to Bitmain, the performance of the device is equivalent to 25 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards – in Ethereum mining, the system is capable of providing 2400 Mhash / s with a power consumption of up to 1920 W and an efficiency of 0.8 J / Mhash.
The device was announced more than a year ago, and by the time it entered the market, it had lost some performance without any explanation from Bitmain. Initially, the performance of a dedicated Ethereum miner was supposed to be 3000 Mhash/s at a consumption of 2556 W and an efficiency of 0.85 J/Mhash – then the device was claimed to be equivalent to 32 GeForce RTX 3080 video cards. More modest specifications may be caused by a desire to reduce price or power consumption, although Bitmain did not give an exact answer.
It should be noted that quite a lot of time has passed since the announcement of the system back in April last year, and since then a lot has changed in the world: cryptocurrencies have noticeably fallen in price and become much less attractive to investors, and inflation has jumped sharply. In addition, the Merge event is expected in the Ethereum blockchain, which will mark the transition of the network to an energy-efficient Proof-of-Stake (PoS) model and the abandonment of mining. It is assumed that it will happen in August, if there is no next time. postponed.
