The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) issued a statement on Wednesday, July 7, in which it reiterated its call to “respect the sovereignty of the people expressed through the vote on July 28” and assured that “ignoring the popular will is illegal and ethically unacceptable.”

The bishops stressed that “All State bodies are called to comply with and enforce the Constitution and the laws, and we expressed our closeness, our support in their pain and our prayers for those who mourn the dead and wounded, for those who are overcome by the anguish of not knowing the whereabouts of those arrested, or the constant concern of being persecuted for defending their convictions and political positions.”
