“My eternal desire is that the life that God has given me should become a blessing to others.” Says Bishop William Michael Mulvey of Corpus Christi Diocese, Texas, USA. He proved through his life that his wishes and words are true. Bishop Michael Mulvey became a crowning example of Christ’s love by donating his bone marrow to a dying mother of blood cancer.
Before becoming a bishop, Mulvey registered his name on the Be the Match registry, the world’s largest bone marrow transplant registry, in 2004 while a priest in the Diocese of Austin. In 2019, following it was discovered that the bone marrow of a woman with blood cancer in San Antonio would match the bishop’s, the organization informed the bishop regarding this and the then 70-year-old bishop traveled to San Antonio to donate the stem cells.
His response was that although he had never met the mother to whom he donated his bone marrow, he was very grateful to her for giving him the opportunity to donate his bone marrow. Bishop William Mulvey described the event as not only an act of charity but also a spiritual experience.
Christ teaches in the Gospel of St. Matthew that ‘what you have received as a gift should be given as a gift. Everyone’s life is a gift from God. It is when we give ourselves to others because of the love of God that we become grateful for the gift given by God,” says the bishop.
