Elena Dengg and Maria Höllwart appear injured in Madrid. Thomas Scharfetter can hardly surprise his opponents anymore.

Sanjindo Bischofshofen has recently established itself as the judo stronghold in Salzburg. At the ASKÖ national championships on the national holiday, the Pongauers were the most successful Salzburg club and won four titles. In the Bundesliga, the women’s team won the basic round without defeat, the men narrowly missed promotion to the final tournament in fifth place. “But that was manageable. Our team there is still very young, the future definitely belongs to them,” emphasizes coach Marianne Niederndorfer.

Elena Dengg is also a promise for the future. The 19-year-old from Mariapfarr is Austria’s youngest participant in the European Championships starting on Friday in Montpellier (France). She is accompanied by her two club colleagues Maria Höllwart and Thomas Scharfetter. All three can still hope to take part in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The Bischofshofen trio is not (yet) one of the hot medal candidates at the European Championships, but all three have recently shown up at international tournaments. With bronze at the Junior World Championships, Dengg won her fifth medal at a major international event. And that despite the fact that she was hardly able to train in advance due to a collateral ligament injury. Since then, she hasn’t been able to give her damaged knee much rest. “But she can hide it excellently,” says trainer Niederndorfer. “And once she’s on the mat, anything is possible with her.”

Maria Höllwart showed what is possible at the European Open in Madrid at the beginning of June. After numerous international podium finishes, the 24-year-old policewoman achieved her first World Cup victory there. “Unfortunately, she is suffering from a slight shoulder injury,” says her trainer. “What is possible with her depends on the draw.”

In Spain, club colleague Scharfetter was also celebrating a podium finish. Bronze was the fourth medal at international level in a row. The 22-year-old butcher missed out on the podium at the last three tournaments. However, a fifth and two seventh places brought him up to 44th place in the world rankings. “He has developed excellently and is fortunately injury-free,” explains Niederndorfer. “But his opponents now know him and are adapting to his fighting style.”
