Births suspended at the maternity ward at least until October 31

The situation is not getting any better at the Guingamp maternity hospital in the Côtes-d’Armor. For lack of medical and paramedical personnel, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Brittany had already been forced on April 26 to suspend deliveries at the city’s hospital center. A suspension which was however to be temporary and last only two months while finding replacements.

But this Tuesday, the ARS announces in a press release that the measure will be extended and that there will be no childbirth at the Guingamp maternity hospital at least until October 31. “Despite the recruitment actions undertaken, the number of carers present is still insufficient to guarantee the safety of care”, indicate the health authorities, specifying however that “the maternity is not closed and that the other activities operate normally. »

A maternity ward threatened with outright closure

To give birth this summer and fall, mothers-to-be will therefore have to turn to other maternity units in Côtes-d’Armor (the hospitals of Saint-Brieuc and Lannion or the private hospital of Côtes-d’Armor) or to those of a neighboring department.

Object of struggle, the Guingamp maternity hospital is regularly threatened with closure. On Saturday, between 2,000 and 3,000 people marched through the streets of the city to save the maternity ward and defend the Breton public hospital. Other actions are also planned in the coming weeks.
