Birth certificates are being digitized in several Cuban municipalities. Here’s how you can request them

The Ministry of Justice announced that the digitalization of the birth section in several Cuban municipalities, as well as in the Unified Registry of Havana, was completed this week. Other territories are currently following this process.

According to the report by Tribuna de La Habana, this entity has completed the digitalization of the birth section of the Unified Registry of Havana, which includes 895 volumes. They explained that the “effort is part of a national project to preserve and protect the country’s historical folios and books.”

They specified that the digitalization was possible “thanks to a donation made in March by the Official College of Administrative Managers of Madrid”, as part of a collaboration agreement.

This donation included 16 state-of-the-art scanners, distributed throughout the country, with a total of 22 planned.

In Havana, one of these scanners processed 722 of the 1,456 volumes in the Civil Registry of Old Havana, while two others were used in the Registry of Duplicate Volumes to complete this week the digitalization of the birth section of the Unified Registry of Havana.

Digitalization of birth certificates advances

Oscar Manuel Silvera Martínez, head of the Minjus, highlighted that this advance not only preserves historical memory by protecting documents at risk of deterioration, but also promotes the computerization and digital transformation of the system.

He also pointed out that digitalisation improves “transparency and speeds up procedures, although the process has yet to be completed in the entire Unified Registry, one of the most complex in the country.”

In Havana, where approximately 70% of the country’s records are located, a scanner continues to work in the digitization of the Civil Registry of Marianao, while another will begin soon in Arroyo Naranjo.

The procedures in Cuba are very difficult due to bureaucracy and the obsolescence of technology, which is why the advance in the digitalization of birth certificates, among other documents, is excellent news.
