Birth allowance: Who and how will receive up to 3,500 euros – 2024-03-06 12:25:25

From 400 to 1,500 euros it increases permanently and retroactively for births which were made from 1.1.2023 birth allowance, depending on the number of children. At the maternity hospital, together with the birth certificate, parents can apply for the increased allowance.

Birth allowance: All new scales

This is the allowance instituted from January 1, 2020, amounting to 2,000 euros for each child born. The beneficiary is the mother who resides permanently and legally in Greece and has an annual family income of up to 40,000 euros.

As announced yesterday, Monday (22/1) the Ministers of National Economy and Finance Kostis Hatzidakis and Social Cohesion and Family Sophia Zaharakis, the birth allowance increases for each child born, according to the number of dependent children in the family (as it is formed after the birth of the child). Until today, the aid amounted to 2,000 euros and was paid in two equal installments of 1,000 euros, while now the amount is increasing and is structured as follows:

  • 2,400 for the first child
  • 2,700 for the second child
  • 3,000 euros for the third child

The aid is paid in two installments

The payment of the allowance amounts will be made in April in two equal installments.

The 1st installment is granted the month following the child’s birth, if the application is submitted and approved within the month of the child’s birth. The 2nd installment will be paid after 5 months from the month of the child’s birth.

The payment of the increased amounts, as well as the payment of retroactive amounts for births from 1.1.2023, is scheduled to take place by April 2024.

The measure comes to strengthen the family, especially in the first period after the birth of a child, which entails inelastic costs, at a time when a decrease in births is observed and in fact in an environment of high cost of living.

The birth allowance in detail:

It is permanently and retroactively increased for births from 1.1.2023, from 2,000 euros for each child to 2,400 to 3,500 euros (an increase of 400 to 1,500 euros) depending on the number of children. It is reminded that from 1.1.2020 it has
institute a birth allowance of 2,000 euros for each child born. The beneficiary is the mother who resides permanently and legally in Greece and has an annual equivalent family income of up to 40,000 euros. Today the aid amounts to 2,000 euros and is paid in two equal installments of 1,000 euros.

Now, the birth allowance increases for each child born according to the number of dependent children in the family (as they are formed after the birth of the child) as follows:

  • 1 child: 2400 (400 euro increase)
  • 2 children: 2700 (increase of 700 euros)
  • 3 children: 3000 (increase of 1000 euros)
  • 4 or more children: 3500 (increase of 1500 euros).

The current cost of the birth allowance amounts to 150 million euros and concerns approximately 75,000 new births per year. The cost of this increase is estimated at EUR 45 million per year and EUR 90 million for 2024 (due to the payment of the retrospective amounts of 2023) and supports approximately 35,000 families with 1 child, 32,000 families with 2 children, 6,600 with three children and 1,400 large families annually.

The payment of the increased amounts, as well as the payment of retroactive amounts for births from 1.1.2023 is planned to take place by April 2024.
