Chur (GR): The fire brigade had to be called ten times because of the pigeons

The fire alarm at Chur’s main station is regularly triggered by birds. And these false alarms are costly for the SBB.

When they were called to the central station of Chur (GR), the firefighters began to know what awaited them. And for good reason, this year, firefighters were called to intervene ten times because of… pigeons.

According to the “Südostschweiz”, the birds present daily on the premises are likely to trigger the fire alarm. But how do they do it? According to Andreas Stampfer, of the city’s fire brigade, so-called “linear” detectors react to both heat and opacity. If the invisible laser line is obstructed, particularly by birds, the alarm sounds.

To prevent this from happening as much as possible, anti-bird spikes are placed near the installation. But as they are not placed directly in front of the detectors, it is possible that a pigeon lands in front of the sensor.

A DIY solution

As it is the responsibility of the building owner to cover the intervention costs, it was the SBB, in this case, which received the invoice. And they see red, because each intervention costs nearly 750 francs.

For their part, the firemen are also not happy to travel and mobilize personnel for nothing. According to Andreas Stampfer, the solution is simple: an eaves should be built above the fire detectors and anti-bird spikes installed there. So the pigeons might no longer land in front of the detectors. Something tells us that SBB is regarding to follow this advice.
