Bird flu: Human case confirmed 2024-04-03 01:22:11

This is the second human case of the virus, which in recent weeks has infected herds of dairy cows in several US states.

Officials said the patient developed conjunctivitis and is being treated with antiviral medication while in isolation. The risk to the general public is low, experts said, but clarified that this is not the case for people who have close or prolonged contact without protective clothing with infected birds or other animals, including cattle.

The development raises concerns regarding the outbreak, which has infected millions of birds and marine mammals around the world and, more recently, cows in the United States. So far, there is no evidence that the virus has evolved to spread more easily between people, federal officials said.

The patient had been in contact with sick dairy cows, said Lara Anton, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of State Health Services.

“We tested regarding a dozen symptomatic people who work in dairies, and only one person tested positive for the virus,” he told the New York Times.

The Department of Agriculture reported the first cases in dairy herds in Texas and Kansas last week, and a few days later, in an additional herd in Michigan. Preliminary tests indicate that cows in New Mexico and Idaho may also be infected.

The virus has been identified as the same version of H5N1, a subtype of influenza, circulating in North American birds. The first human case of H5N1 bird flu in the US was recorded in 2022 in Colorado, when a person became ill following direct exposure to suspected infected poultry. This person experienced fatigue for a few days and made a full recovery. While bird flu is often fatal to poultry, it has been less lethal to cattle.

The CDC recommends that people not consume raw or undercooked unpasteurized milk, or raw or undercooked products, such as cheese, made from unpasteurized milk.
