A novel and original biomechanical study will take place during the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. One whose purpose is for athletes and delegations to know the scientific reason for their sports records.
Harold Mayne-Nichollsexecutive director of Santiago 2023, together with the rector of the San Sebastian University, Hugo Lavados Montessigned a collaboration agreement to carry out this pioneering work in this type of competition.
This is an observational study that will be carried out by researchers from the House of Studies, students of kinesiology and physical education, as well as experts from the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC), where they will analyze a large number of variables in the athletes, with a view to evaluating their physical capabilities in the search for high-competition sports performance.
The project focuses on the observational analysis of technical and biomechanical aspects in athletics events, by recording speed and jump tests in athletics from inside the National Stadium during the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
This through 2D recordings using modern technologies such as high-speed and high-definition cameras capable of record 300 images per second; radar speedometer, photoelectric cells and Kinovea image analysis software.
The rector Hugo Lavados highlighted that “the San Sebastián University is committed to the development of sports, contributing to the training of future talents in the different disciplines, but also supporting activities that promote knowledge, the participation of our researchers and academics and putting the facilities of the USS Sports City are available.”
For his part, Harold Mayne-Nicolls mentioned that “An investigation of this type had never been carried out in the Pan American Gamesso this contribution from the USS will mark a milestone for sports scientific research in the country and the world, adding to the legacy that will go down in the history of these Pan American Games.”
Tests
25 people make up the team of researchers, academics and students from the USS Faculty of Health Care Sciences, Kinesiology and Physical Education who will participate in carrying out the study. Headed by Dr. José Luis López, from the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC).
There will be eleven events that will be analyzed on the track: 100 m, 400 m, 800 m, 1,500 m, 5,000 m, 10,000 m, 3,000 m hurdles, 100 m hurdles, 110 m hurdles, 400 m hurdles, and 4 x 100 relay. mts. Temporal, spatial, spatiotemporal, angle and other technical aspects data will be extracted from these tests.
Subsequently, these recordings will be processed in software and analyzed to then deliver the information to athletes and their coaches. as a key input to improve their performance.
