Friday, November 3rd, (U6 station Jägerstraße) and Tuesday, November 7th, (U4 station Margaretengurtel) from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m
Vienna (OTS) – In spring there were free herbs for the flower bed at home, now it’s the turn of the hedge plants: On November 3rd and November 7th, the city will distribute free hedge plant packages, consisting of four regional shrubs, to people whose main residence is Vienna. Above all, native insects such as wild bees or butterflies, but also various species of birds, are happy regarding the new bushes. The selected plants are available for either sunny or partially shaded locations and were grown regionally to promote local flora and fauna.
“In order to protect our environment and the climate, we need the help of all Viennese people. By distributing the free hedges, we want to motivate people to get involved,” emphasizes Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky. “Active environmental protection makes friends and has positive added value for flora, fauna and the microclimate in our city!”
Registrations are now open at possible.
City councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky will be taking part in the distribution campaign on November 3rd from 2:30 p.m. – together with district leader Christine Dubravac-Widholm, he will be distributing plants at the U6 Jägerstraße station.
A contribution to biodiversity
Hedgerows are a valuable habitat for a variety of organisms. But they also serve as a source of food and offer protection from predators and weather influences. “With this campaign we are promoting biodiversity in our city, but also awareness of the importance of intact nature in urban areas. Everyone who plants a bush is committed to a livable and sustainable Vienna – just as the City of Vienna’s environmental protection department has been doing for 50 years now,” said the Climate City Councilor.
With actions such as the “Vienna Forest and Meadow Charter” and the action plan for species protection, Vienna is positioning itself at the forefront of urban nature conservation. The preservation, addition and renewal of forests, green spaces and water bodies are measures to maintain biodiversity in urban areas.

Information regarding the distributed hedges
Both hedges for sunny and semi-shady locations are distributed. The former includes the willow, dog rose, invasive hawthorn and buckthorn. The honeysuckle, the common viburnum, the black elderberry and the cornelian cherry are happy with partially shaded locations. The regionally grown plants are delivered bare root. Therefore they must be planted quickly. The hedge bushes must be stored in a container filled with water immediately following collection and planted in the ground within the next one or two days. The selection of plants is adapted to the climate in our latitudes and is therefore hardy.
