Binding of Isaac creator gives new information about his next game

In addition to the acclaimed Binding of Isaac, video game designer Edmund McMillen has been working on another game called ‘Mewgenics’ that has been in formal development since 2012, but it was not until 2018 that he and his team took up the project once more following acquiring the rights from the studio Team Meat (Super Meat Boy).

During that reboot, Mewgenics was turned into a roguelite tactical RPG and was given a tentative release date of 2025.

Recently, McMillen took to the Mewgenics Steam page to give fans a heads up a massive update regarding where development stands and when we should expect to hear more regarding the release date.

In the post, he noted that they only have 15 enemies and 12 bosses left before the monster roster is complete and that all of the cat abilities are already finished. As for what they still have left to do, McMillen said, “The three main things we have left to do are items (regarding 1/4 of the way done), events (regarding 1/6 of the way done), and sound effects (I think regarding 3/4 of the way done, but this one is hard to figure out).”

In addition to this, he mentioned that he and his team are relatively confident that they will have all the content finished by the end of 2024. From now on, they will begin polishing the game to begin the process of promoting and marketing the game.

Mewgenics will be very different from The Binding of Isaac

As we mentioned earlier, Mewgenics is a tactical RPG that is split into two stages: a combat stage and a breeding stage. At the start of the game, you are assigned a team of four cats, which feature character classes, such as hunter, mage, and healer. Cats have different stats, such as access to mana pools, that influence their roles and performance.

Combat is heavily influenced by the environment, with the weather affecting performance, if a cat loses all of its hit points it will be incapacitated, but will remain in battle, although it will suffer long-term consequences such as brain damage, and might still be killed with three subsequent hits from enemies.

If a cat dies, its items will be lost, including exclusive rarities that can only appear once. After a successful battle, the player can choose a cat to level up, thus improving its abilities.

The second stage of the game, breeding, enters once the player has completed their run. Surviving cats return to the home hub, taking with them their stats as well as equipment that other cats can use.

Two cats in the same room can mate, resulting in the offspring of a new cat that inherits the traits of its parents. Inbreeding, the act of breeding cats with closely related parents, results in offspring with mutations and other deficiencies. As the simulated time passes in the game, cats die of old age.
