Billions for microchips from Austria

Semiconductor components, microchips and the like are integral parts of the further development of digitalization. Semiconductor production in Europe should double from 10 to 20 percent of the global market by 2030, according to the goal of the EU “Chips Act”. Following on from this, the federal government wants to further strengthen the sector in this country, which has been defined as an industrial policy priority. From 2024 to 2031, almost 3 billion euros will be invested to trigger more than 7 billion euros in investments.

There are currently around 280 companies in the industry in Austria. A good 72,000 people work there. A major issue and slowdown recently have been problems with the supply chains. Dependence on global flows of goods should decrease.

With the investment, “we can support research and new investments by semiconductor companies along the entire value chain in Austria,” said Labor and Economics Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) in a statement on Friday. “In this way, we are positioning Austria as one of the leading chip locations in the world.” Digitization State Secretary Florian Tursky (ÖVP) sees the investments as necessary in order to survive global competition. It’s also regarding Austria’s “sovereignty”.

The almost 3 billion euros will flow as investment subsidies as part of the European Chips Act into the production of chips amounting to 2.8 billion euros by 2031, of which 150 million euros in 2024 alone. A part is also for a further national increase of the EU-wide project “IPCEI Microelectronics II,” the ministry announced.

Praise for the project came from the Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ), the Industrial Association (IV) and the Association of the Electrical and Electronics Industry (FEEI). Everyone sees job security. WKÖ President Harald Mahrer spoke of a “correct and necessary focus”. IV boss Georg Knill said that strategically important research and development projects as well as significant investments in production facilities for the key technology of microelectronics can be realized in Austria. “There is great added value for Austria as a location,” said FEEI boss Wolfgang Hesoun.
