J Balvin and I have a date at Tiffany’s.

To be honest, it doesn’t sink in until I reach the historic display cases on Fifth Avenue, where I’m directed to a private elevator staffed by a uniformed attendant who silently takes me up, up, up. The doors open into a stunning private room with unlimited views of Manhattan and Central Park, where I also meet José Álvaro Osorio Balvin. He looks stately, in a sleek white short-sleeved T-shirt tucked into black Prada cargo pants. His beard is trimmed and his hair is neatly tied up in braids, revealing his diamond earrings. On his wrist he wears a Patek Philippe watch.

It’s a rare oasis of calm for an artist who lately seems to have been moving non-stop in multiple directions at once. Since the beginning of the year, Balvin has appeared in a teaser from Usher’s Super Bowl halftime show; released a new shoe in collaboration with Air Jordan; is the face of the new Cheetos “Leave Your Mark” campaign; was headliner at Coachella (the second artist of the day, behind Doja Cat), with a surprise appearance by Will Smith; He toured Europe and then Australia and New Zealand; and in August he launched Rayhis first album since 2021. He is currently preparing a collaboration with G-SHOCK watches and before the end of the year, Peacock will broadcast a new interview series that he will host. And he’s already gearing up for his first leading role in a feature film, in the drug drama Little Lorrainedirected by Grammy-winning director Andy Hines and scheduled for release in 2025.
