Bill Proposed to Expand Supreme Court Judiciary in Pakistan’s National Assembly

In the session of the National Assembly, the amendment bill to increase the number of judges of the Supreme Court was postponed.

In the National Assembly session chaired by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, a notice was presented by Naveed Qamar on the 4.8 million acres of land given for corporate farming and the change in water flow.

He questioned how the water needs of Sindh would be ​met, given the existing water shortage. ⁤Qamar also raised objections⁢ to the removal of the Kala ⁣Bagh Dam from the agenda.

Federal-Provincial Water Dispute

Malik responded to Qamar’s concerns,‌ stating that the federal government does⁣ not have the right to​ dictate to provinces how to use water. He emphasized that each province must make its own decisions and cited the telemetry program as a⁤ solution to address any concerns. However, the ​debate remained inconclusive, with Qamar reiterating his‌ concerns about the water shortage and the implications ​of corporate farming.

Khurshid Shah’s Critique

PPP leader Khurshid Shah expressed disappointment with Malik’s response, questioning the calculation of water requirements for the project. Shah highlighted that the country’s water capacity is 14 ‍million acre-feet and that the decision was⁢ taken by the caretaker ​government.

Bill to Further Amend Criminal Laws

Sohail Sultan of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf presented a bill to further amend⁢ criminal‌ laws, focusing on the punishment for bounced bank checks. Sultan argued that the ⁢existing three-year punishment‍ is inadequate and that bail is ⁢easily obtained. The bill was referred to the relevant standing committee.

Constitutional Amendment Bill

Noor Alam Khan of Jamiat​ Ulema-e-Islam (F) presented a constitutional amendment bill to amend Articles 51, 59, and 106, aiming ⁤to give representation to overseas Pakistanis in the parliament. The ⁢bill was also referred to the relevant standing committee.

Other Constitutional Amendment Bills

Other ‍constitutional⁢ amendment bills were presented, including one to amend⁣ Articles 177, 193, and 208. These⁤ bills were also referred to the relevant standing committees for further discussion.
