Microsoft founder, Bill Gateswarned this weekend that the world may not yet be through “the worst” of the coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19 and once once more warned that there is still a risk of new and more dangerous variants of the coronavirus.
“We are still at risk of this pandemic generating a variant that would be even more transmissive and fatal,” Gates told the Financial Times.
Gates, one of the most heard voices during the COVID-19 pandemic, pointed out that he did not want to sound “pessimistic”, but warned that the risk of a more dangerous variant emerging is “well above 5%”.

“It’s not likely, I don’t want to sound pessimistic, but it’s well above the 5% risk that we haven’t even seen the worst of this pandemic,” he said.
This last weekend, Gates published a long article on his website, in which he referred to his new book “How to prevent the next pandemic”, and argued that “we cannot continue to live with the threat of another variant, or another pathogen, hanging over our heads.”
“We need a permanent organization of experts who are fully paid and prepared to mount a coordinated response to a dangerous outbreak at any time,” he urged.

Gates recommended, among other things, “improving disease tracking” and “strengthening health systems.”
“We do not need to surrender to living in perpetual fear of another global catastrophe. But we must remain aware of the possibility and be willing to do something regarding it. I hope that the world seizes this moment and invests in the necessary steps to make the COVID-19 the latest pandemic,” he said.
