Bill Gates enters the sewers of Brussels and explores the “hidden history” of the country’s groundwater system to mark World Toilet Day on November 19.
The former Microsoft CEO explored the Belgian capital’s groundwater drainage system. He shared a video on Instagram to educate people regarding the rich history of Brussels.
“I explored the hidden history of Brussels’ sewage system – and the role of wastewater in global health – for this year’s World Toilet Day” Bill Gates wrote on Instagram.
“I experienced it all at the Brussels underground museum”, he says in the video. The text also mentions the changing urban sewage infrastructure: during the 1800s, city sewage was discharged directly into the Senne River, leading to devastating cholera outbreaks. Today, a sophisticated 321 km network of sewers and treatment facilities efficiently manages and treats the city’s waste.
World Toilet Day helps raise awareness regarding sanitation and hygiene and find solutions to ensure everyone has access to clean and safe toilets. Without it, many diseases can spread.
