Samuel L. Jackson has had many iconic roles. In “Big Game” he becomes the President of the USA and has to fight for survival in the wilds of Finland. It’s a lot of nonsense at times, but it’s also really good entertainment.
There are films that are so stupid that they are either unbearable or funny because of their unbelievable stupidity. “Big Game – The Hunt Begins” also initially seems to fall into one of these categories. A US President, played by Samuel L. Jackson, who crashes his plane in the Finnish wilderness and has to be protected from terrorists by a precocious teenager with a bow and arrow? That sounds like a lot of nonsense!
And yes, if the mediocre reviews (metascore of 53) and the opinions of many film fans (IMDb rating of 5.4) are to be believed, then “Big Game” really isn’t a good film. But we see it differently: The action comedy is just a lot of fun and is so full of passion for filmmaking that we confidently ignore the obvious logic holes and clichés – especially since “Big Game” is well aware of its unrealistic premise and uses sympathetic irony and gloriously over-the-top action sequences.

The Finn Oskari (Onni Tommila) is only 13 years old when he is sent from his village into the forest. According to local tradition, he is supposed to spend a night there, killing a wild animal in order to finally become a real man. At the same time, US President William Alan Moore (Samuel L. Jackson) is on board a plane flying directly over the forest where Oskari is located.
But terrorists attack and the President falls in the middle of the wilderness. He survives, but now he’s alone in the forest and the assassins are still on the hunt for him. Then he meets Oskari, who, despite all his self-doubt, turns out to be a real survivor.
The Finnish village boy senses his big chance: If instead of a wild animal he brings home the real US President (alive) then fame and honor are guaranteed. So the unlikely duo join forces to brave the wilderness and the terrorists…
