Big Bazar Faces Bankruptcy: The Dutch Chain of Stores in Crisis

2023-09-04 15:56:38

The Dutch chain of stores Big Bazar did not obtain from the justice a delay in order to allow it to agree with its creditors. Bankruptcy is approaching for this group which owns a dozen stores in Belgium.

Big Bazar had requested a period of reflection during which no bankruptcy application might be introduced, but this request was rejected on Monday by the court in Leeuwarden (north of the Netherlands). The judge does not think the company will be able to find a solution within two weeks. The court relied in particular on the calamitous figures of the “good business” company. The company, little spared by the coronavirus crisis, shows losses ranging from 13 to more than 17 million euros between 2020 and 2022. The debt would amount to several tens of millions of euros.

The August wages were paid, but the rent of several businesses was not honored on September 1, noted the justice.

The chain has 120 brands and 1,400 workers, mainly in the Netherlands, but also around ten stores in Belgium. Big Bazar had recently announced the closure of 20 businesses in its domestic market.
