“Important voice of contemporary German-language literature”: The Salzburg writer receives the state’s Grand Art Prize.

She grew up in Salzburg, where she also studied German and journalism from 1989. In 1992 she went to Berlin. From the late 1980s she worked in the Salzburg authors’ group, in the Salzburg literary workshop and at the literary magazine “erostepost”. Kathrin Röggla is one of those who always sees her literature as a contribution to the socio-political debate and gets involved. In addition to public appearances, she uses a wide range of stylistic forms, ranging from prose, drama and essays to radio plays and multimedia installations. Always committed to the values of the Enlightenment, Röggla is one of the most productive and innovative authors in German-language literature. For this, among other awards, she also received the Austrian Art Prize in 2020. Her current novel “Running Procedure” (S.-Fischer-Verlag) was nominated for the German Book Prize this year.

On Tuesday evening in Salzburg, Röggla accepted the state’s Grand Art Prize for literature, which is awarded every four years (in rotation with music, visual and performing arts) and, as of this year, is endowed with 20,000 euros.

Rögglas’s “program of ‘ghostly realism’ makes the author an important voice in contemporary German literature,” says the jury’s statement. With irony she reflects “the global economization of our living conditions and our social fictions in the ‘post-truth’ age.” She proves to be a “future researcher with a seismographic sense”.
