Biden was expected to give detailed answers about why he resigned

It has been three days since Biden announced in an open letter on X/Twitter that he is withdrawing as the Democrats’ presidential candidate.

He did not give a detailed explanation of why he stepped down, but promised to return to the background of his decision in a speech later this week. On Wednesday evening at 8 pm American time (2 am on Thursday Norwegian time) he will give his announced speech, which according to the AFP news agency is expected to last up to 10 minutes.

Ahead of the speech, Biden has stated that the speech will be about “the way forward and how he plans to finish the job for the American people”.

Several Republicans have believed that Biden should resign immediately as president and pointed out that if he is not fit to be a presidential candidate, he is also not fit to lead the country now.

But Biden has made it resoundingly clear that he intends to serve out his term in the six months he has left.

Several American media, including the news channel PBS , interprets Biden’s statements as meaning that he wants to accomplish as much as possible in the time he has left as president and that he is thinking about his political legacy. Since he announced his resignation, Biden has been referred to by several American media as a so-called “lame duck” president, i.e. someone who still retains the title, but who lacks real power.

After Biden made a very poor appearance in a televised debate against his predecessor and challenger Donald Trump at the end of June, he came under increasing pressure to withdraw from the election campaign and let younger forces in. When he resigned on Sunday, he immediately pointed to Vice President Kamala Harris, who in a short time has gained broad support from the vast majority of groups on the left.
