Annexation of territories and international rejection

After the Russian president’s lengthy speech, the leaders of the four regions (loyal to Moscow) signed the annexation decrees, bringing more than 15% of the territory of Ukraine into the Russian territory.
The regions of Lugansk and Donetsk, wracked by fighting since separatists there declared independence in 2014, make up the broader Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.
