Washington, Jul 17 (EFE).- In an interview with BET News published on Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden said he would reconsider his decision to continue campaigning for the November elections if a doctor diagnosed him with a serious medical problem.
Asked what circumstances would make him reconsider his continued presence in the race, Biden replied: “If I had a medical condition, if doctors came to me and told me I had this or that problem.”
This is the first time Biden has left the door open to the possibility of withdrawing from his presidential bid in the face of mounting pressure within the party to do so, to which he has so far responded defiantly.
Pressure on Biden to drop his candidacy and abandon his re-election aspirations has grown since the face-to-face debate in late June with his Republican rival, former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), from which he came out badly damaged.
To date, 23 Democratic congressmen have asked him to step aside, but many more have expressed doubts regarding Biden’s age – 81 years old – and mental agility to face the tough campaign once morest Trump.
In the interview with BET News, Biden also admitted that in 2020 he said he was “going to be a transitional candidate” and that in 2024 he would hand over the baton to someone else.
“But I didn’t anticipate that things would become so, so divided. Frankly, I think the only thing that comes with age is a little wisdom, and I think I’ve proven that I know how to get things done for the country. And I don’t want to let that go,” he added.
