Biden regrets court verdict

WASHINGTON (EFE).— U.S. President Joe Biden said yesterday that the Supreme Court’s ruling on former President Donald Trump sets “a dangerous precedent” by determining that any president “can feel free to ignore the law” without facing consequences.

“Now, the American people have to do what the Supreme Court should have done. The American people have to make a judgment regarding Donald Trump’s behavior,” Biden said in remarks from the White House in an attempt to mobilize voters for the November elections.

The Supreme Court on Monday granted Trump partial immunity for his efforts as president to overturn the 2020 election result that led to the Capitol riot, and sent the case back to lower courts, effectively reducing the former president’s chances of being tried before the election.

Trump, for his part, yesterday described the Supreme Court’s decision as a “victory for democracy.”

“A big win for our Constitution and democracy. Proud to be an American!” the Republican wrote in a message, in capital letters, on the social network Truth Social.

Letter to a judge

In New York, Trump’s lawyers have submitted a letter to a judge asking to overturn his recent criminal conviction and postpone his upcoming sentencing, citing the Supreme Court’s decision to grant partial immunity to former presidents, The New York Times reported yesterday.

According to the American newspaper, Trump’s lawyers asked Judge Juan M. Merchan to postpone the sentence, scheduled for July 11, while he evaluates whether yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling affects the conviction.
