Biden refuses to back down

WASHINGTON (EFE).— Between June 20 and 25, according to data collected by FiveThirtyEight, US President Joe Biden managed to stay slightly ahead of Republican politician Donald Trump, never being more than 0.3 percentage points ahead.

On the eve of the debate, Trump turned the situation around and has since then been increasingly winning the eventual support of citizens ahead of the elections on November 5, with voting intentions that on July 1 were already 1.4 points above those of his adversary and yesterday reached 2.2.

Biden, meanwhile, insists that he has no intention of abandoning his candidacy.

Just yesterday he made a surprise appearance on a video call with the staff working on his re-election campaign to tell them: “I need you now more than ever. I am going to keep fighting. We are going to do this until the end,” according to sources close to his electoral team who told EFE.

Kamala gains strength

However, US Vice President Kamala Harris is gaining strength in recent hours as a possible replacement for Biden, should he give up his re-election bid due to his poor performance in the debate once morest Trump.

Kamala Harris has had a low popularity rating throughout her term in office and her presidential candidacy did not seem like a realistic option until last week’s failure of Biden, who appeared in the debate aged and disoriented, multiplying the voices that believe he is not fit to continue in office at 81 years old.

The 59-year-old vice president not only has the advantage of being Biden’s natural successor, but polls of voting intention place her ahead of other popular faces in the party and she would inherit the entire structure of the campaign.

Kamala attempted to address the rumors yesterday by participating alongside Biden in a call with re-election campaign staff, thereby sending a message that she unconditionally supports the president.

But according to a CNN poll published the day before yesterday, Ms. Harris would have a better electoral performance once morest Trump than Biden, although the Republican would win in both cases.

In a duel between Biden and Trump, the Republican would win with 49% of the votes compared to 43% for the Democrat.

If Kamala were the candidate, 47% say they would vote for Trump and 45% for her.

The Democratic campaign has rallied around Biden, whose family is encouraging him to stay in the race, but a growing number of people within the party are privately calling for him to drop out.

Both The New York Times and CNN reported yesterday that Biden had admitted to a close ally that his candidacy is in jeopardy if he does not manage to calm things down soon, a claim denied by the White House.

Convention already has a date

The Democratic National Convention will take place from August 19 to 22.

Nomination

Although he has secured his nomination following winning the primaries, US President Joe Biden is not yet the official Democratic candidate for the November 5 election and is waiting for the party to make it official before its national convention in August.

Replacement

Analysts agree that for Biden to be replaced, he would have to give up his nomination, and in that case, his running mate would be the favorite to replace him. The vice president would also have “the key to most” of the money raised by the campaign.
