Trump’s administration has faced considerable criticism regarding its handling of the Social Security Administration (SSA). Almost immediately upon returning to the White House, Trump began slashing the government workforce. Along with a planned layoff of 7,000 workers and controversial plans to impose tighter identity-proofing measures for recipients, the SSA has been sued over a decision to allow Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to access individuals’ Social Security numbers and other personally identifiable information.

What we’re seeing now, with the workforce reductions at the Social Security Administration and these troubling plans about individual recipient data, alongside the rhetoric coming from some in the administration, is deeply concerning. These actions lead to slower services for Americans, an unnecessary opening to fraud, and an undermining of one of America’s most bedrock social safety nets.

What’s your perspective on what we’ve seen as actions by the Trump administration?
Joe Biden: “It’s critically important to speak honestly, so let’s clarify some things. The workforce reductions and the identity-proofing measures, while potentially presented as efficiency efforts, feel like a pretext for program cuts. The actions don’t appear to be driven by the best intentions, but by a desire to break down the agency, and leave the most vulnerable without protections. As someone who helped build up the SSA, I find this very disturbing. Elon Musk’s sentiments – the suggestion that Social Security is a ‘Ponzi scheme’ – are, frankly, risky, and dismissive towards millions of Americans who depend on this program. ”

Joe Biden: “Firstly, we absolutely must protect the core benefits for those who have paid into the system their entire lives.We also need to explore the potential for adjusting cost-of-living increases to more accurately reflect the spending habits. Further, and most importantly: there must be a focus on collaboration and bipartisanship. We need a broad coalition and need a shared understanding that Social Security is a promise we must keep. Unfortunately, actions speak louder than words. I am hopeful we can come to some agreements that will secure the money for the generations to come.
