US President Joe Biden’s diplomatic agenda this week and next week focuses on strengthening the Indo-Pacific strategy.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations and ASEAN Special Summit will be held at the White House from the 12th local time, and next week, they will tour Korea and Japan.

In particular, during his visit to Korea and Japan, President Biden is expected to launch the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) to check China’s expanding economic influence.

It is an economic consultative body centered on four themes: trade and supply chain, decarbonization and infrastructure, and anti-corruption.

To this end, the United States is known to have encouraged participation by publicly publicizing the draft launch declaration to allies and partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

Traditional allies that are certain to participate, South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand were included in the target, and it was reported that the same information was delivered to 7 of the 10 ASEAN countries, excluding Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

The official inauguration ceremony is expected to be held during President Biden’s stay in Japan.

It is discussed that the leaders of the United States, Japan, and Australia participating in the ‘Quad’ meeting held in Japan hold the meeting face-to-face, and the leaders of South Korea, New Zealand and Singapore participate via video.

President Biden is expected to put a lot of effort into embracing countries other than Singapore and the Philippines, which are likely to join during the ASEAN summit in Washington.

ASEAN countries are concerned that the decision to participate in the absence of clear incentives such as tariff cuts may result in alienation from China without significant income.
