Biden has 3 options – Al-Marsad Libyan Newspaper

The American website Axios revealed that four leaders of the Democratic committees in the House of Representatives (Jerry Nadler, Joe Morrell, Adam Smith and Mark Takano) said in a phone call with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries that President Biden should end his 2024 candidacy.

“People are upset and think he should step down,” said one senior Democratic lawmaker.

“Most of the concerns were regarding the swing districts and the most vulnerable seats,” another noted, adding: “It was regarding how to win the presidency, the Senate and the House… There was a lot of concern that if we continued in this direction, we might have trouble regaining the majority.”

The site learned that Senate Democrats will not meet today, Monday, to discuss their support for President Biden to continue his re-election bid, despite efforts by Senator Mark Warner to organize such a meeting.

From pressures within Biden’s party, to the media, where the editorial boards of the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal have called for Biden to drop out of the presidential race.

The New York Times editorial called for Biden to be replaced with a younger, more energetic candidate who might defeat Trump and prevent him from returning to the White House for four more years.

The Wall Street Journal stressed the need for Biden to withdraw following “America’s enemies” saw him weak, stuttering, and losing the order of his thoughts, while showing signs of old age in a way that cannot be ignored, which harms America’s image and interests.

Will Kamala Harris be Biden’s replacement?

Biden’s running mate, Kamala Harris, has become a major concern for Republican donors, as many top Democratic figures have begun lining up behind her.

Prominent Democrats see Harris as a natural successor to Biden if he drops out of the race.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham also confirmed that Democrats may replace Biden with his deputy Kamala Harris in the race for the White House presidency, describing her as “very active in the campaign.”

Recent polls suggest Harris may do better than Biden once morest Trump.

In a CNN poll, Trump beat Biden by six percentage points, with 49 percent to Biden’s 43 percent.

While Trump beat Harris by just 2 percentage points, 47 percent to 45 percent, a difference that is within the margin of error.

3 options for Biden.. What are they?

  • Option 1: Biden stays

Biden has benefited from public statements of support from major party leaders such as former President Barack Obama, former President Bill Clinton, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. James Clyburn, along with Democratic governors Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer.

This scenario is supported by the absence of any competition for Biden during the party’s primary races, and his obtaining the pledges of 3,900 delegates out of 4,000, or nearly 99% of the delegates.

This scenario is based on the fact that any other alternative will harm the party and its cohesion in light of the fragile cohesion between the party’s progressive and traditional currents, which was revealed by their conflicting positions towards the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip.

  • Option 2: Voluntary withdrawal

This scenario assumes that Biden decides to retire himself, and here the party’s task is theoretically easy procedurally in how to find another candidate to run for president.

Biden’s voluntary withdrawal would leave the Democratic convention open, with other potential candidates being voted on until one gets a majority of delegates. That might spark a heated contest among Democrats vying for the nomination.

Senior party officials fear chaos if Biden leaves the field for open competition if he withdraws and more than one candidate enters the race.

  • Option 3: A coup once morest Biden

This is a scenario in which Biden is forced to withdraw involuntarily, and it is less plausible. No party has ever tried to nominate anyone other than the candidate with the most delegates, and there does not appear to be any movement in that direction yet.

There is no evidence that the party would consider a change without Biden’s approval. But even if it did, there is no mechanism to replace a nominee before the convention, and no way to appoint a chosen successor.

This scenario would only occur if large segments of the Democratic Party lost confidence in Biden, as delegates to the national convention might theoretically defect en masse.

If Biden steps down during his term, Harris would take over as president. But the same rules don’t apply if Biden withdraws as a candidate in November’s race, and there’s no mechanism to give the vice president the upper hand at an open convention. She would have to compete like any other candidate seeking the party’s presidential ticket, and she would have to win a majority of delegates, just like any other candidate.
