[ジッダ(サウジアラビア) 16日 ロイター] –US President Joe Biden attended the Arab Summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on the 16th, stating that the United States will continue to be an active partner in the Middle East and will be involved in creating a positive future for the region. On the other hand, it was not possible to obtain commitments on security in the region including Israel and immediate increase in crude oil production.
Biden, the first president to visit the Middle East, presented his vision and strategy for US involvement in the region. However, the joint statement of the summit was ambiguous.
Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal said he was unaware of any discussions regarding the defense alliance between the Gulf states and Israel, and that he was not involved in such discussions. He told reporters that the decision to open airspace to all airlines had nothing to do with establishing diplomatic relations with Israel and was not a precursor to further action.
Biden visited Saudi Arabia hoping for an agreement on crude oil production as inflation rose to its highest level in 40 years due to soaring gasoline prices. However, no promise to increase production was obtained, and OPEC Plus, which consists of oil-producing countries such as Saudi Arabia and Russia, hopes for a meeting to be held on August 3.
“I’m looking forward to what will happen in the coming months,” he said.
