Joe Biden criticized, on Monday July 25, the inaction of his predecessor Donald Trump during the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. “For three hours, the battered former President of the United States watched events unfold from the comfort of his private dining room near the Oval office”launched the Democratic president on the sidelines of a conference of an organization of African-American police chiefs.
“While he was doing this, brave policemen lived through a hell worthy of the Middle Ages (…), being covered in blood, surrounded by carnage, facing a raging crowd who believed the lies of the defeated president”he continued. “The police were heroic that day. Donald Trump did not have the courage to act”underlined Joe Biden, noting that one might not “be pro-insurgency and pro-police”or “pro-insurgency and pro-democracy”.
These criticisms echo the conclusions of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the January 6 attack, which estimated during a public hearing on Thursday July 21 that the Republican billionaire had “failed in his duty as commander-in-chief” by not intervening to stop the wave of violence from his supporters in Congress for three hours. Joe Biden, criticized by his opponents for the renewed violence in the country, is a few months away from crucial legislative elections, which might see the Republican party take over the House of Representatives currently dominated by Democrats.
Affected by the Covid-19, Joe Biden feels “very fit”
The American president, almost recovered from Covid-19, said Monday that he hoped to be fully back to work within the week. “I feel very fit”he told reporters at the end of a meeting with business leaders on microchip manufacturing, which he attended via video link.
In a slightly hoarse voice, the 79-year-old Democrat, confined since his positive test on Thursday, rejoiced to have had two good nights of sleep in a row. “In fact, my dog even had to wake me up this morning”he smiled.
Joe Biden had continued to work, but had lightened his schedule during his recovery. The president seems to have had mild symptoms, and the White House has done everything to reassure him regarding his state of health and his ability to govern, even confined.
Earlier, his personal physician said he had virtually no symptoms of the disease, in a letter released by the White House. “His symptoms have now almost completely disappeared”had written the doctor Kevin O’Connor.
The president still suffers from a small nasal congestion, had specified the doctor. The age of Joe Biden – who received a full vaccination and two boosters – puts him in the category of those at risk of developing a severe case of the disease.
