Biden: China will not further escalate Taiwan dispute

US President Joe Biden has expressed confidence that China will not expand its maneuvers around Taiwan and that the situation will continue to escalate. “It worries me that they’ve gone this far,” he said yesterday, en route to the flood plains in the US state of Kentucky, in view of the largest ever naval and air force military maneuvers in the waters around Taiwan. “But I don’t think they will go beyond that.”

Observers fear that there might be military confrontations with the armed forces of Taiwan. The USA is also present in the region with strong naval units.

With extensive military exercises, China reacted to the visit of the President of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan on Tuesday and Wednesday last week, which the government in Beijing regards as a violation of Chinese sovereignty. She regards Taiwan as a breakaway part of the People’s Republic. At the beginning of the week, China continued its military exercises, which should have ended on Sunday, in front of Taiwan.
