(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Yeon-sook = It was reported on the 21st (local time) that US President Joe Biden had asked French President Emmanuel Macron to propose a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to Archyde.com and AFP, an official from the Elysee Palace, the French presidential office, said on the same day, “We are slowly changing the situation.”

“We are creating a diplomatic perspective that the Kremlin accepts,” he said, introducing Macron’s role as “a facilitator.”

The official also urged Putin’s decision regarding the summit with the US.

An official from the Elysee Palace said that the current tension between Russia and the West over Ukraine is “a very dangerous situation” and “the parties are walking a tightrope.”

“Today, it is possible to move towards a summit,” he said.

The day before, the Elysee Palace announced that President Macron had proposed to Biden and Putin to hold a mirror summit, and both of them accepted it in principle.

The White House later issued a statement stating that Biden would agree to a meeting with Putin if a Russian invasion of Ukraine did not occur.

The Kremlin said that there are no concrete plans for the US-Russian summit yet, and only a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries is scheduled for the 24th.
