Biden approves $2 billion in grants to “win support” in 8 states

The eight states include Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia, which are presidential battlegrounds, while the grants will go to electric vehicle plants in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland and Virginia.

The White House said Thursday that the U.S. Department of Energy will issue grants totaling $1.7 billion to create or preserve thousands of jobs and support the auto-based communities that have long driven the U.S. economy.

The White House added that the grants cover a wide range of automotive supply chains, including parts for electric motorcycles, school buses, hybrid drivetrains, batteries for heavy commercial trucks, and electric SUVs.

“Building a clean energy economy can and should be a win-win for unionized auto workers and automakers,” President Joe Biden said in a statement.

“This investment will create and retain thousands of good-paying, union jobs from Lansing, Michigan, to Fort Valley, Georgia, by helping auto companies retool, re-engineer and rehire in the same plants and communities,” he added.

Biden stressed that the grants, funded under the historic Climate Act of 2022, will help fulfill his commitment to ensure that the future of the auto industry is “Made in America” by American workers.

“The workers my predecessor left behind are now returning with the support of my policies, including the transfer grants my administration announced today,” the Democratic president said.
