As part of her precautionary activities, she has recently been increasingly concerned with the potential dangers of bicycle trailers. She still remembers the terrible accident four years ago in the Korneuburg district, in which two small children died. “Both the mother and the driver of the accident are still struggling with the psychological consequences of this tragedy,” says Stöckler. For the lecturer for emergencies, however, this worst-case scenario is not the reason not to use this type of transport. “Many parents are not even aware that they have no supervision or control over their small children,” says Stöckler. The offspring sits unattended in the trailer and can easily choke on the food without being noticed. “That can have fatal consequences, parents always prick up their ears in my courses when I talk regarding it.” According to a study published last year, the level of pollution in these trailers is also far higher than, for example, in a raised child seat on a bicycle.
Likewise, children might face a heat collapse at high temperatures in the trailers, which can be closed with a protective grille, and the psychological stress is not insignificant. “I don’t want to pillory anyone, neither parents nor producers,” says Stöckler. Because of her experience in emergency prevention, however, she wanted to warn and point out the dangers: “That is a personal concern of mine.”
