Biathlon World Cup – No mass-start globe for Quentin Fillon-Maillet, double blow for Sivert Bakken

Jacquelin ends in style, Fillon Maillet can savor. The final bouquet of a historic season has kept all its promises. On a last spectacular mass start, Emilien Jacquelin (3rd, 18/20) conquered a podium full of panache on Sunday in Oslo-Holmenkollen. The Villardien was only beaten by a 100% Norwegian duo, Sivert Bakken (20/20), winner, and Sturla Laegreid (18/20), second.

In the race for the globe of the specialty, Quentin Fillon Maillet (17/20) started too far following failed coats. The timpani finally went to the winner of the day, who had never raised his arms in his career before this Sunday. For his last in the World Cup, Simon Desthieux finished in an honorable 9th place (17/20).

Incredible: Oeberg deprived of the small globe of the mass-start… because of his compatriot!

QFM weighed down by his lying shots

The absorbing music and overhead sun set the tone. It was time to celebrate on the edges of the Holmenkollen track, dressed in the thousand colors of the nations celebrated on Sunday at the end of the Olympic season. A man still had the fangs on the tricolor side, but he was not wearing a yellow and red bib. Launched into a crystal globe operation, Quentin Fillon Maillet (17/20) was disillusioned from the first couch, dropping two balls and a ticket for victory. A lap later, the Jurassien missed a third target on the second lying down, condemning his chances of finishing on the podium, or of keeping the lead in the specialty classification.

Jacquelin on the mass start podium, Fillon Maillet loses the small globe

More precise on his lying down, Emilien Jacquelin (18/20) did his best to animate the race, not hesitating to produce his effort on a few reminders, or to drop his balls at the speed of sound. The ax was very close to falling on the first standing, who penalized him with two penalty laps. But the recipe is inherent to the character, fed with panache. After a happy outcome at the end of the last standing (5/5), the Isérois clung to the forceps to the rejuvenating silhouette of Erik Lesser, in weightlessness since the announcement of his retirement. From a last mine in the last butt, the Habs secured a final podium full of promise for next winter.

The heist of Bakken, the farewell of Desthieux

Despite this, Jacquelin finished the season fifth overall. The new dolphin of a definitively crowned Quentin Fillon Maillet is called Sturla Laegreid. Amazingly fast on the track, the Norwegian got stuck in the final once morest his young compatriot, Sivert Bakken (23). The Lillehammer native initially seemed to suffer from the spring weather around Holmenkollen Hill. As the laps progressed, Bakken got back on track, and delivered a furious sprint to unlock his counter in the World Cup. Good news never comes alone, the Scandinavian steals the globe from the mass start for four small points at QFM.

The Jurassien will console himself with the very heavy bag of three globes: those of the sprint, the pursuit, and the general. The crowning achievement of a seasoned Stakhanovist, far from the more diffuse personality of Simon Desthieux, passionate regarding the effort before the challenge. The biathlete from Hauteville-Lompnes (30 years old) puts away the skis and the rifle on a nice 9th place (17/20). A page turns in the tricolor clan with the departure of the last link of the Olympic champion relay (mixed) in Pyeongchang (2018).
