This book makes it possible to understand the American social novel as a narrative about the search for social justice to be achieved through the individual and collective transformation of society. This change must be brought about by ideas, but also by people. Therefore, within the narratives examined, consciences are formed and developed that are intended to move the masses to a critical and systemic assessment of their economic and social situation. These consciences are Julian West’s in Looking Backward, Jurgis’s in The Jungle, and Tom Joad’s in The Grapes of Wrath. The expression of a social consciousness that emerges at the individual and collective levels is one of the fundamental characteristics of the American social novel. Through biased prose, the authors construct this consciousness, which eventually transforms into a political consciousness, sometimes self-conscious as in Bel/amy and Sinclair and sometimes ambivalent and diffuse as in Steinbeck. Through the discourse and the atypical lives of the characters who carry this consciousness, the authors criticize, deconstruct and undermine the much-sung myth of the American dream.
