Tarragon There is no doubt that they are one of the masters of complex, demanding, and emotionally rich black metal music. Founded 20 years ago by Thorsten H. and supported in the studio by Theotoxin colleague Flo on drums, the project even debuted on the German album charts in 2021, climbing to number 29, receiving a well-deserved welcome from fans Enthusiastic reviews and detractors. If not, it happens to physical people too “erg” reached such a state.
One or two well-known guests can ensure this, such as Phil from “Mystery of the Moon” and “The Crone,” who improves the opening “From a Smokeless Fire.” What initially approaches slowly and cautiously suddenly explodes with raw brute force and underlying melody, propelling forward in a magical, almost unnoticeable way and not letting go. A short break in the middle highlights Agrippne’s lesson. They have a firm grip on the audience’s emotions and know exactly how to move towards catharsis – a powerful final scene filled with screams of pain and anguish seen and heard.
A song like “Hour of the Wolf,” on the other hand, immediately explodes and goes straight into the media res—a furious, uncompromising frontal assault that’s breathless, exhilarating, and yet deeply depressing. Little moments of elegance. On the two-part “Blut” PG von Groza joins in and leaves his mark on the heavy second part. Agrypnie approaches the realm of doom, playing with the mud but taking no prisoners. This also applies to the ending of “Under the Sand,” which feels like it’s constantly surging, boasting spiritual moments yet seemingly influenced by the ugliness of the abyss, all the way to its majestic, jarring conclusion.
It’s no surprise that with Agrypnie, you get exactly what you expect and hope for. Thorsten H. once again pushes the delightfully idiosyncratic sound to the edge of madness. “Erg” also results from a continuous interplay, from countless nuances and gripping breaks, but also from a positive intensity, which is made even better with the help of selected guests. In Agrypnie, everything is back to normal. Now that may not come as a surprise, but it still makes you nervous – further encouraging evidence of the formation’s special status.
