Type 2 diabetes develops when the insulin-producing cells in the body are unable to produce enough, and high blood sugar levels can injure nerves throughout the body. What are the signs on the hands that you might have this condition?

According to the express website, diabetic neuropathy occurs when high blood sugar levels damage nerves.

Mononeuropathy (also known as focal neuropathy) refers to damage to a specific nerve.

For example, numbness or tingling in the hands (or fingers, except for the pinky) is a sign of mononeuropathy, type 2 diabetes.

Other conditions of mononeuropathy include hand weakness, which can cause objects to fall.

Neuropathy may affect up to 50% of diabetic patients.

In addition, mononeuropathy can lead to difficulty concentrating, double vision, or pain behind one eye.

Side effects of diabetes may also cause paralysis on one side of the face (Bell’s palsy).

It is possible to have more than one type of neuropathy, depending on which nerves are affected.

Peripheral neuropathy:

The most common type of neuropathy is peripheral neuropathy (also known as symmetric distal peripheral neuropathy).

Symptoms of this complication of diabetes usually worsen at night, and tend to affect the feet and legs first.

Symptoms include: numbness, decreased ability to feel pain, or changes in temperature.

Other symptoms include tingling or a burning sensation, severe pain or cramps, foot problems, ulcers, infection, and bone or joint pain.

Proximal neuropathy:

Proximal neuropathy, also known as (diabetic atrophy), affects nerves in the thighs, hips, buttocks or legs.

The person may feel severe pain in one of these areas, and the person may experience severe stomach pain as well.

There may be a spasm of the quadriceps, and people with this effect may find it difficult to get up from a sitting position.

Therefore, it is necessary to go to a specialist doctor, to receive appropriate treatment, and to undergo medical examinations.

Your doctor will likely order a urine sample and will arrange a blood test to check your blood sugar levels.

If type 2 diabetes is confirmed, the doctor will discuss what the condition is, lifestyle modifications to make and medications you can take.

From this point on, you will have regular check-ups to make sure you are in control of your diabetes.
