If you receive a message from a relative inviting you to add it to your address book, be careful, it is a scam.
You may have received this week an SMS from a relative explaining to you that he had just changed his number, and inviting you to add him to your contacts on WhatsApp. If so, check immediately by contacting him on his old number. There is indeed a good chance that it is a scam…
As La Libre reveals, fraudsters send blind text messages, using names and sometimes nicknames to interact with their victims. They pretend to be a son, a daughter, a father, a mother or a friend.
“Hello mom, I can no longer send messages with my number” can we read in the revealed message by La Libre. “In the meantime, you can reach me on WhatsApp with this number once you see this SMS, kiss.” A seemingly innocuous message, which can however cause you immense harm. Because fraudsters use this technique to recover personal information regarding their victims, before a potential hack, or even in some cases to request emergency financial assistance from a loved one. This one, who thinks to help his son, his daughter or a friend, unknowingly makes a payment to a complete stranger.
In general, the instructions remain the same so as not to be fooled: always verify the identity of a person who has sent you an SMS or an email, avoid clicking on a link or an attachment, and preferably try to communicate with the person through your usual communication channel to make sure it is really them.
