The day has finally arrived, the return to school is already a fact since this Monday, August 12. But, not everything is rosy, along with this start of the 2024-2025 school year, scams are proliferating.
In fact, purchases related to the return to school are not exempt from being an easy target for theft.
Over the past few weeks, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a warning on the issue to both parents and students. Experts urged them to be very careful when asked to provide personal information.
“As college students across the country prepare for their studies, they can become ideal targets for scammers. Unscrupulous individuals are looking to take advantage of the busy academic season, both online and over the phone,” the FTC notes.
Beware of technological frauds!
It is true that young students are familiar with the most popular technology and fraud models.
However, still are more prone to certain scams than older people, according to fraud detection specialists at JPMorgan Chase.
There is no doubt that pressure always works against teenagers and young people. It is recommended to be predictable and plan your purchases to mitigate the risk of falling for a scam. Thieves know that time is their ally when making last-minute purchases.
The main reason why students tend to fall for it is the search for significant discounts on their school supplies. Also included are textbooks and technological tools, such as computers and tablets, which are the most expensive instruments.
Online shopping is very convenient and easy, but it also makes it more likely that you will fall victim to identity theft. In search of the best deals, cybercriminals create fake sites with extraordinary discounts.
If you see an offer that is so good it might seem fake, check immediately to see if the website is real or not. Don’t click on links sent via email or text message.
