Beware, a tax refund scam has been set up by web hackers and is spreading. Here’s everything you need to know to avoid being fooled.
Another internet scam. This Monday, July 24, nearly 15 million French taxpayers received a refund of part of their taxes. It was enough for a new phishing attempt to emerge.
Like many others, it consists of recovering taxpayers’ bank details. The latter are targeted by means of a fraudulent email which informs them that a sum of money awaits them on their personal space on the tax site.
“After reassessment of the scales for calculating your income tax, we have determined that you are eligible to receive a refund from us in the amount of 158.40 euros”, here, for example, is what victims receive by email.
how not to fall into the trap?
To avoid falling into the trap, it is necessary to open the eye. First clue, the email is accompanied by a link asking to enter their bank details. However, the tax authorities already have this kind of information. In fact, if the email was authentic, nothing would be requested.
In addition, inconsistencies can also alert: words cut in two or spelling mistakes often slip into these fraudulent emails.
Finally, the email is supposedly valid “only forty-eight hours”. However, if public finances are indebted to taxpayers for any amount, such a deadline would not be specified.
In reality, no steps need to be taken to collect an amount owed by taxes. In this case, the transfer is automatic. You can still connect to your account, via the site impots.gouv.fr to check if any has been sent.
