Beware of occupations that would increase the risk of ovarian cancer

A study reveals that because of the products used, ovarian cancer is more frequent in certain professions.

At present, ovarian cancer is one of the most common in women. On average, 5,200 new cases are detected each year. But if he stays away from breast cancer, he remains very deadly. Indeed, unlike other tumors, those present on the ovaries are often detected too late. In addition, screening campaigns are still little known to the public.

This makes this cancer a source of concern for health professionals today. However, a hitherto untapped factor might in the future be taken into account in early screening. In fact, a Canadian study conducted over 6 years focused on the relationship between the onset of ovarian cancer and occupation by the patients.

However, they found that certain professions, particularly in the field of beauty, are more at risk. The full study on the subject was published in the BMJ Journal in July 2023.

The beauty, sales, construction and accounting professions concerned

Between 2010 and 2016, researchers studied data from nearly 500 different patients. Aged 18 to 79, they had one thing in common: they had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In addition to their medical records, the scientists also compared other personal information with a panel of 900 healthy women.

However, the researchers noticed that the profession exercised might have a real influence in the development of the disease. Among other things, the professions most at risk would be those related to beauty such as hairdressers, beauticians… However, the study also states that textile trades, saleswomen or accountants would be the most affected by disease.

Even more surprising: the researchers found that if the profession had been exercised for more than 10 years, the risks were multiplied.

Products favoring the appearance of ovarian cancer incriminated by the study

If the risks are greater in these professions, it is no coincidence. The authors of the study point the finger different chemical products and compounds that would promote the appearance of tumours. Asbestos is at the top of this list, especially since its impact on health is now known.

Nevertheless, the researchers also denounce other products which have not yet been the subject of serious studies. This is particularly the case of ammonia, hydrogen peroxide (used in hair bleach), talc or dyes.

However, the researchers point out that the study represents a step forward but not a definitive conclusion. They suggest conducting further research to determine the real links between the onset of cancer and occupation.
