Beware of Highly Organized Fraud Scheme in Saint-Jérôme: Police Department Warns Public and Merchants

The Police Department of the City of Saint-Jérôme warns the population and merchants once morest a fraudulent scheme used by a highly organized group.

As a customer completed his purchases in a store, two fraudsters carefully watched his transaction.

The scheme consists of identifying the customer’s PIN and then stealing his wallet a few seconds later.

Robin Pouliot, police officer in Saint-Jérôme, showed our journalist an example of a fraud committed by the group.

“We are talking here regarding a first suspect who will position himself so as to see the person when he is going to do the PIN code […] people will target victims, often slightly older people. At first, a first suspect will approach the victim, ”he says, regarding ten feet away.

A second suspect, located a little further, participates in the scheme.

“There is going to be an angle effect. Both will observe the victim’s PIN code,” he added.

At the exit of the big-box store, one of the suspects grabbed the customer’s wallet to proceed with the purchase of various objects within minutes of the theft. Fraudsters make sure to withdraw as much money as possible from the card.

“The victim will simply go and carry his basket and you will see the two suspects steal the wallet very, very quickly and very discreetly,” explains the police officer from the city of Basses-Laurentides, while the client never realized the trap.

Met by TVA Nouvelles, a resident of the Laurentians, Ms. Girard, was defrauded for nearly $5,000 at the end of April.

Fraudsters observed her at the cash register as she entered her PIN.

In the parking lot, the fraudsters took all of his bank cards from his wallet.

“I was not in a good mood, I said to myself that I was had […] at the self-service checkout, someone bothered me […] I went to my car and there is a gentleman who accosted me,” she said.

The lady remains in uncertainty, since her bank does not plan to reimburse her for the stolen sums.
