They appear in the menu bar: either just a warning triangle with an exclamation mark is visible, or this triangle is shown next to a display icon. What do they mean?
Signal for danger of overheating
With the icons, the MacBook draws attention to the fact that it is a bit too warm. It then dims the display to keep it from overheating. Apple informs regarding this here.
The same applies to the rest of the Pro Display XDR. Apple recommends several things to reduce the risk of overheating once more:
- Quit all apps on the MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR display, which may consume significant system resources.
- Use the Apple XDR Display or Pro Display XDR reference mode unless your current workflow requires a specific reference mode.
- Lower the ambient temperature in the room.
- Close or hide all windows with HDR content.
- Choose Apple menu > Sleep to put your Mac to sleep.
- Allow the display to cool for 5 to 10 minutes, then press any key on the keyboard to wake your Mac.
In case of existing problems: Off to the store
If nothing helps and the ambient temperature is below 25° Celsius, you should visit an Apple Store with the device. Then something is wrong with it and it should be replaced or repaired.
