Potatoes are one of the foods that many people prefer to eat, whether fried or boiled, but there are some fruits that contain green spots, so is it harmful or safe for health?
Dr. Sherine Ali Zaki, head of the Food Safety and Field Follow-up Committee at the General Syndicate of Veterinarians, says that the green color is chlorophyll, which the plant uses to perform photosynthesis in order to make its food, and it is a substance that has no harm to health, but chlorophyll is evidence of the presence of another substance secreted by the plant Naturally called solanine, chlorophyll and solanine are secreted together, but solanine leaves no trace and is known to be present in chlorophyll.
The head of the Food Safety Committee explained, via the “Get in the Lokma” group on Facebook, that solanine is a type of natural toxin in food that some plants secrete as a defense mechanism once morest fungi and pests.
And she continued: “Solanine, according to the World Health Organization, can cause harmful health effects and risks to human and livestock health, and some of these toxins may be severe, so eating these green vegetables in large quantities may cause severe stomach pain, diarrhea and dry throat, including Long-term health consequences Impact on the immune, reproductive or nervous system.
Zaki identified a set of tips when buying or storing potatoes:
Avoid buying green potatoes.
– It is better to keep potatoes in a cool, dry, dark place, with the necessity of not placing them in the balcony, because light causes the secretion of this substance along with chlorophyll.
– If those fruits were stored and the green color appeared, the green color can be cut along with part of the fruit until we get rid of the green color completely, and then consume the rest of the fruit that is free from the green color, but if the green color occupies a large area of the fruit, it is preferable to dispense with it completely.
